About Player Pools

Players in our system are grouped into 11 pools (4 for pitchers and 7 for batters). Not every player line from MLB history is included in our system, though all stats are present in the database bundled with the software. To get into a pool, a player must meet a minimum threshold of play for the MLB season in question. In parentheses (below) we show the qualification standards.

Pitching Pool Qualifications

  • Starting Pitchers: (IP > = 165) and (GS > = 24)
  • Spot Starters: (IP > = 80) and (GS > = 6 and < = 23)
  • Relievers: (IP > = 50) and GS < = 5 and GR > = 18)
  • Odds and Ends: (IP > = 20) and (IP < = 49) and (ERA < = (LGERA * 1.5)) OR (GS > = 6) and (IP < = 80) and (ERA < = (LGERA * 1.5))

Note: These minimums are eased somewhat for Dead Ball era players.

Batting Pool Qualifications

  • Catchers: (PA > = 375) and (G@C > = 50)
  • First Basemen: (PA > = 450) and (G@1B > = 50)
  • Second Basemen: (PA > = 450) and (G@2B > = 50)
  • Third Basemen: (PA > = 450) and (G@3B > = 50)
  • Shortstops: (PA > = 450) and (G@SS > = 50)
  • Outfielders: (PA > = 450) and (G@OF > = 50)
  • Odds and Ends: Remaining players with > = 20 AB as Pinch Hitter or players meeting certain batting/fielding thresholds who could serve as defensive substitutions and bench players

Notes

  • When a player played for two or more teams in a season, stats lines are NOT combined. Each player must qualify based on the above standards for each of the teams he played for or he will not be included in the pool(s). Occasionally, an OEB or OEP player will qualify for two teams.
